Today is the 11th of July 2015 and I’ve meant to write this post for just over three years. Well, not this exact post, but to start documenting my online business journey.
It all started with Tim Ferriss’ Four Hour Workweek. I picked the book up at the airport on the way to Australia, to start a new chapter in our lives. We were moving to Oz, after an amazing stint working in the Cayman Islands.
The book was fascinating. I started researching the magical world of online marketing, “passive income”, niche sites, SEO, information products, app development, web design, virtual assistants and other forms of outsourcing, dropshipping, podcasts, etc. It was all pretty overwhelming but really exciting!
I learnt a great deal, discovering who all the key players were and still are (the guys who have been in it for a few years and were absolutely dominating the market).
The problem is, that was in April 2012 and I feel like I haven’t achieved much since then. But I have! I’ve discovered that the most important thing to do, is…. *drum roll* to start doing something. Lame, but true!
I’ve been spinning my wheels for the last three years. I’ve researched the mechanics of WordPress, found ways to get apps designed, downloaded resources on SEO (search engine optimisation), and signed up to a hundred mailing lists, but never really built anything!!
So a few months I ago, as we were about to move house and shortly after changing jobs (i.e. as good a time as any to take on something new :), I decided to built a niche website teaching newbies about the awesomeness of mountain biking. I literally spent 15-30 minutes on it, just a couple of times a week, sometimes with weeks going by where I couldn’t get anything done. It was super frustrating, but it was all the time I had available, so I just kept plugging along. Slowly but surely the site started taking shape.
I haven’t monetised the site yet, and I don’t think anyone is visiting it at this stage, but I am laser focused on my main project… a website to help people with the spreadsheeting software Microsoft Excel. I’ve just registered the domain, excelbuzz.com (it can change, but good now is better than great later).
I’ll use the Work For Passive Income website to keep an online journal of sorts, to keep tabs on my progress. I should have started it ages ago, but rather now than another year down the line
